Buying a Computer
General Information
Both Windows and Macintosh computers are very similar, as far as quality. Generally speaking, this decision comes down to personal preference. There are no advantages or disadvantages to having either platform - either will work with the UConn network. Both platforms support Microsoft Office and documents created are cross compatible between platforms. If the computer is for general use (browsing the Internet, sending/receiving email, and/or writing papers) then either option will work fine.
Ninety-nine percent (99%) of all computers on the Waterbury campus are Dell’s. Dell Intel processor PCs running Windows are more prevalent on the Waterbury campus, with a wider technical support structure. We do not repair student’s computers but when time allows we may be available to answer some of the technical questions.
Access and Storage Information
- Make sure your computer has an Ethernet and Wireless access. Eighty percent (80%) of the campus supports both types of access to our students. (As long as all settings and security issues are taken care of students can plug their Ethernet cable into the outlets located throughout the building. Students accessing the Internet via our wireless connection need to register each time using their NETID).
- There is currently no network space provided by the University for students to save files on either a short term or long term basis. For this reason, the Waterbury I.T. & Media Services team recommends backing up data on USB sticks/flash drives.
Downloading Files
All Network work traffic is monitored for bandwidth usage. The university abides by copyright laws and, therefore, illegal downloading of music, games, software, etc could result in an RIAA or MPAA complaint or sanction.
