Choosing A Schedule of Classes

Here are some guidelines when selecting courses for the Fall 2008 semester. Unlike your previous academic experiences, you now have a greater degree of flexibility and responsibility for the direction your academic program will take.

The best place to begin is at the Department or School/College level. What are the requirements for the program of study you are interested in pursuing? You can access this information via the Academic Programs and Majors section of the UConn Web site. There are easy links to each major at the University as well as the individual Schools and Colleges.

In addition to researching information for Academic Programs and Majors all undergraduates must complete their School/College General Education requirements.

It is important to check the general education requirements for your major since there are differences between programs of study.

  • For students in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, you can access information on the their General Education requirements by clicking here.
  • For information about the University General Education Requirements click here for a helpful grid.
  • Here is a listing of the General Education Requirements for the School of Business to help with course selection.

What should I take? is a common question for first semester Freshmen. A lot depends on your major. Some, like Pre-Pharmacy or Engineering give specific courses.

Here are some recommendations:

  • Take a Freshman English course
  • Enroll in a Freshman Year Experience course (INTD 1800)
  • If your major requires it, take a lab science
  • Explore--take a course that sounds interesting
