Freshman Year Experience Course Information
Your entrance into the University of Connecticut will be a time of new experiences. The beginning of college life is incredibly exciting, but it is also a period of transition. You may be eager to engage, but also have some apprehension about what lies ahead. You may be wondering: What should I expect? Can I adjust? Will I know where to go for help? To help ease the transition, the University of Connecticut has developed the University Learning Skills course.
Success at UConn begins with the INTD 1800 FYE University Learning Skills course. FYE University Level Skills (INTD 1800) is a one-credit class that brings students together weekly to interact and adjust to the new expectations they face at UConn. This course is designed to provide first year students with the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the university and explore issues relevant to new students at UConn. Its aim is to assist new students in making a smooth transition to college while engaging with others who share many of the same questions, concerns or anxieties. Through this course, students will develop the skills necessary to begin and maintain a successful college career.
As part of this course, you will:
- meet other new students at UConn
- enhance your communication skills
- get to know individuals whom you can turn to for guidance and support
- learn about University resources and facilities
- tackle new technologies (HuskyCT) in a non-threatening environment
- discuss common first year student issues
- time management self survey
- improve your study skills
- examine career choice topics
- learn strategies for problem solving (including interpersonal conflicts)
- be introduced to basic academic advising expectations and procedures
It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that new undergraduates to UConn register for the course.
