Lab Rules

Violators may be asked to leave the laboratory, may have computing privileges revoked by the Computer Coordinator, or may be referred to a college official or law enforcement official for discipline.

  1. Courteous behavior is appropriate at all times. Speak in a quiet voice and do not interfere with the work of others. If a problem arises, contact the Lab Monitor.
  2. No foul language. A good rule here is: if you are not sure, don't say it.
  3. The laboratory operates on a first come, first serve basis. However, you must yield the use of a computer or leave the laboratory when asked to do so under the following conditions.
    1. Yield when asked to do so by a Waterbury staff member or student monitor of the Lab.
    2. Yield to an individual or class that has reserved a space or device.
  4. You are responsible for your own work.
    1. College standards of academic honesty apply in the computer lab.
    2. Do not store your files where someone else can use them, (e.g., on a hard disk drive).
    3. Do not attempt to use on or off-campus computer files or accounts to which you do not have proper access.
    4. Student Lab Monitors and staff are not trained to answer specific questions about coursework. If you need help with a computer, ASK! Student employees, located at the Monitor's desk will gladly instruct you in the use of supported computer programs, fix problems with computers and ensure that you can use the computers properly. Student employees are not able to answer questions about specific assignments. Consult the appropriate texts or manuals or contact your instructor for academic assistance.
For example: A student employee can explain how to use Ms Word Spell Check feature but has no obligation to suggest which word would be the most appropriate.
  5. If you suspect a problem with a computer you are using, report it to Lab Monitor or contact the Computer Coordinator at ext.9862.
  6. No cell phones, food, beverages, tobacco, or music are permitted in the laboratory.
  7. Installation and playing of games are prohibited--people have work to do.
  8. Do not copy software from these machines. Unauthorized duplication of software is strictly prohibited, and in almost all cases, a violation of federal copyright law. By copying software, you expose yourself and you will be held responsible for any infringement of copyright laws.
  9. Do not remove college property from the laboratory without written permission from the Director of Computer Information Services. This includes manuals and unused printer paper.
  10. No student use of the telephone - there is a pay phone at the bottom of the stairs.
  11. Absolutely no downloading or displaying of even remotely questionable material. This includes both graphics and text.
  12. TAMPERING WITH CAMPUS COMPUTERS AND/OR THEFT OF COMPUTER EQUIPMENT IS A VIOLATION OF THE UNIVERSITY OF CONNECTICUT STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT. STUDENTS VIOLATING THESE GUIDELINES MAY BE SUBJECT TO ARREST, SUSPENSION AND EXPULSION FROM THE UNIVERSITY.
